    Sergeant Rodriques had a rather thick Puerto Rican accent, sometimes hard to understand. At first formation one day he bellowed, "De uniform for today iss de helmut liner, de pisto belt, an de meetinous gloffs." Nobody got the last item, and one of the Platoon Guides asked him to repeat it. "DE MEETINOUS GLOFFS, YOU FOOL, DE MEETINOUS GLOFFS!" he roared. Somebody finally figured it out -- mittens

    I remember the scene where he throws the shell back on and eggs drip down. As a kid(50 years ago) that grossed me right out. Since? Well, lets say I've done similar stuff...with the same helmet. Who'd have thought?

    The Steel Pot was one of the more useful personal items. Bath out of it, shave out of it, make soap and popcorn in it, dig a hole with it, use it as a pillow, even wear it. Shame to give it up.
