    Your USMC service number

I saw a 1967 MC flick today about Parris Island recruit training. It showed the wooden 1st/2nd Battalion barracks and the masonry rifle range barracks. In the beginning, they show an enlistment contract with someone named XXXX Peter Jr. a service number of 2331019 and an enlistment date of May 1967. That sounds about right. I hit the Island about 67 APR XX and was number 231727X.

The flick said about 2 million Marines went through the island up to that point. I wonder what that number is today.

I was drafted (Army) in July of 69. Was assigned a service number that I used for about 2 weeks before they went to SSNs. I suspect all services changed about that time.
Still can't get that service number out of my head.

I enlisted in the Marine Corps in October of 1970. My service number was 2703143. They were beginning the transition to SSNs at that time. For a time my service number was both. Add the MOSs on behind and it became a hellava number to recite.
Like said earlier, the number will never leave my head.
I was a Hollywood Marine. I graduated in platoon 3143. interesting coincidence.

2125569 Sep 1965 MCRD San Diego

I recall reading an article back in 1970 about the Corps switching from service numbers to SSN's and was surprised to learn that one of our platoon leaders from 1/9 in Vietnam was in charge of the project. Don't recall his name now.
