Stock on Bavarian carbine

A friend just picked up a 3.8mm Bavarian IBM carbine. The stock is high wood and un-sanded, with the attached photos showing the markings on the right side and in the sling well. What’s odd is that the stock appears to be a Winchester rather than an IBM. There are no remnants of any WRA markings anywhere though. The questions would be, does the 3/8” cartouche look good and can anyone make out the markings in the sling well? It looks like the lower parts of two B’s, but the Bavarian markings (which match the serial) have been over stamped above the original lettering. Thanks for any opinions.

In a way, you pretty much summed up what it is, perhaps without knowing it. First, yes it has the 4 digits of the carbine's serial number stamped into the traditional slingwell location, although it's one of the most uneven stamps I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of Bavarian carbines too. Second, the stock appears to be a BR-B (Milton Bradley Co.).
As far as the cartouche goes, much of the details one needs to see are not there. What I'd do is simply measure the thing and you can tell if it's Winchester or IBM, which it most likely is. BTW, the later style Winchester cartouche is about 1/2 an inch tall while the will come in closer to 3/8 of an inch. Finally, the stock has some of the yellower tones of a Birch. Hope my ramblings help!

I studied the pics closely before looking beyond the first post. I see "BR-B" behind the Bavarian markings. Looks like walnut to me. Check to see if the length of the cannons in the "wheel" are 0.45 inches in length. The Riesch book gives that dimension for the IBM cannons. - Bob

I have noticed that IBM stocks tend to mirror Winchesters in the usual ways. Flat forearm, generally kind of thin except at the middle grip point. That one certainly has a slash shaped sling cut out. Anyone else?

Coalgeo: My grandfather was from Durant, Dad from Bluefield, Uncle from Huntington. Other Uncle slipped across the border to Uniontown PA. From what I gather Durant was real Hatfield and McCoy stuff.

My buddy says that the stock does have the flat forearm and a full pistol grip. There are 3 holes under the butt plate, though, not the more common 1. The ordnance belt is 3/8" in diameter. He was just concerned about someone re-stamping the stock, but it's seems to be more promising that it is original to the rifle.

Three holes under the buttplate would be consistent with a Milton Bradley carbine stock. It sounds like you have an IBM with appropriate cartouche...nice find.
