Looking at a No4 mk1* help with price.

    Hello all,
I stopped in a new shop near my Dr. Office
A very nice looking No4 mk1* caught my eye. Very nice condition. Wrist band and Ser# match but I could not see the bolt # with out my cheaters.
It has a,Parker hale 5 series peep sight ( at least it looks like a 5)
Over all the gun looks very good. Bore is about as nice as,I ever have seen with a spotless crown....although I lost interest quickly at a 900$ tag?
    What could I be missing?

Going prices for No.4 in US on Gunbroker for a good condition Mk1* (Long Branch or Savage Stevens) with a PH-5 sight and matching numbers would be in the $500-550, maybe $600 at most. Wait.

If it is a true SR(b) modified rifle with a Parker Hale or Fulton regulation stamp, along with the front trigger guard swivel, then it might be worth 900. Rare guns in the US, which had quite a bit of work done. 900 price would be a gun with a mint bore and crown that is clearly a SR(b) rifle assembled in the UKicon from a known firm that specialized in rifle regulation.

On the other had if it is a bog-standard No4 Mk I* with just a PH 5C sight added than 500 to 600 is a fair price, the PH 5 sight by itself is a ~250 dollar item to the right buyer. The rifle by itself is whatever the rifle condition warrants. If the bore is excellent and the external condition close as you state, then 350 is a reasonable price, considering to restore it to military condition would require the rear sight parts. The cost is around 43 dollars from springfield sporters (after shipping) for a LB or S marked rear sight set (plus the ejector screw), so subtracting 50 dollars for the lack of sight parts would be about right for the cost of the rifle. (An excellent No4 MK I*, S or LB would be around 400 or very near these days)

Seen UF serialed No.4 in the grease plus in the grease No.4s here in Oz on usedguns.com ranging from $1800 ~ $2500/AU so 900 is not that bad.
In Aus for a No.4 the average price is around 6 - 800/AU

In the US a "new" No4 MK II is in a different category but the chap asked about a NO 4 MK I* north American production rifle.
