I'm guessing The Canal, the guy on the left still has an '03 and the M1looks newish.
Real men measure once and cut.
The '03 was the squad rifle grenade weapon until the M7 launcher for the M1rifle was in widespread issue. (1944). The marines had M1903s on the canal, the army brought the M1 with them, but still used the M1903 as a squad grenade launcher.
Glad I didn't have to shovel that hole/trench/ bunker!
Don't look like they have been their long, clean shaven.

Maybe just surfacing after arty or mortars who can say but the 2 GI's standing are ready, the chap emerging his weapon appears to have had good use?
