    Question 1916 Shtle MKIII

We have the above mentioned rifle we would like to validate and get as much info about as possible. We have that the Bolt, the breech, the nose cap, the magazine, the rear sight, all match as a 7221 serial number. There are other numbers on the mag and the rear sight that have been lined out. There are stamps and markings all over this weapon and we are unable to make anything out of them. I have included a link to my drop box that has several photos. Please let me know if there is something else you would like to see and we will send a pic as quickly as possible.

Here's a similar old girl in the MKLicon ...

    1917 ShtLE (Short Lee-Enfield) No.1 MkIII*

Does your rifle have a dent in the wood?

In the 1917 example above, note the large dent shown in the side of the forestock in a few of the pics of the photo virtual tour. At first glance it appears to be wood damage from some kind of impact, when in reality, it actually indicates that the stock of this rifle was from old supplies that had already been cut-out, in preparation for installing the front volley sight. By the time this rifle had been manufactured in 1917, the use of front and rear volley sights on No.1 rifles had been discontinued, as of January 1916.

It does look as though the star has been struck. It's also sporting a Mosin Nagano sling!

Ah yes, the Mosin Nagano, the rarest of all Mosins, hand crafted in the same Japaneseicon prefecture that would later host the 1998 Winter Olympics!
