Mk5 Sten – Progress Report

Thought some of you might like to see how the Mk5 Sten is progressing.



The first picture is how it looked when I got it.

The pistol grip was in need of help.



This is where I am with it now.















As you can probably guess, I am VERY happy with the repair of the pistol grip. It’s a processional job that was done by an armoUrer who has a great deal of experience. The walnut patches are dovetailed in and the dowels are English oak.













The suppressor is not finished yet. The barrel still needs to be parkerized and the aluminum tube that holds the K-baffle stack needs to be anodized.

I am also working on the front sight.

This ought to be nice when finished. I could grouse that the grain of the patches is running the wrong way but the finish is very nicely done...

I think the grain of the patches is done that way intentionally to make them stronger.

Thanks, but I didn’t do the work. My woodworking skills are nonexistent.

Those reproduction grips don’t look bad. I like the patched one better. I think it adds something to the gun.

The foresight on the early silenced Mk5 was a clamped ring. But the standardised gun, the Mk6, had the Mk2 blade machined across the barrel housing

Thanks Peter. The early clamped on ring type is the one I am coping. That way I can change between the suppressor and the normal barrel.

Do you know how the front end of sling attached on the silenced Stens? I have seen pictures of it hooked through the thermal sleeve lacing and just looped around the silencer.

The sling was reversed for the silent guns according to the SAI's. The looped sling part went around the silencer casing while the hook thing went into the sling loop of the butt. But the operator would do what suited him best.

Last photo of the ported barrel. It looks like an actual Mk5 barrel has been used as you can see the rear end of the lugs for the foresight block band. Is it a modified Mk5 barrel? What do you pack the rear end around the gas ports with?

Yes, it’s a modified Mk5 barrel. It also has the notch that the pin fits into to index it. The part in the picture goes on first. After the barrel nut is tight the tube is put on.

I tried packing it with a stainless steel scouring pad. I couldn’t tell if it reduced the noise. It did help contain the carbon fouling some.

I need to work on reducing/containing the fouling more. It gets difficult to take apart if the carbon is allowed to build up.
