I've never seen that head gear on Marines before.

In the OP first photo, the third man (with water spot) has a M1903 rifle with the large (USMC) front sight cover, as does the eighth man in the front rank. I see at least three M1903s.

I am not very aware about American ammo pouches (or really anyones for that matter) but they look a bit thin to be carrying a enbloc clip. Earlier ammo pouches for the 5rd stripper clips?

Windy day. Look at the ties. The fella with the campaign hat in the first photo is out of step.

That headgear is U.S. Marine pressed-fiber pith helmet, a headgear for warm climes. My father, ex-U.S. Navy and the king of Army surplus re-tasking, picked one up for use in his work doing water quality testing on the Tennessee River in a speedboat in the hot summer sun. He found that it was the right combination of lightweight and shade production.

Field scarves not ties, my uncle was a China Marine told me that the pith helmet was standard cover in Shanghai.
