Belgian Inglis

Here is my recently acquired Belgian Inglis. It has 2 magazines with matching numbers on the mag body and base plate. The base plates are not original Inglis parts. Does anyone know if it was common for the Belgian Inglis magazines to have this type of base plate (see second pic)?

Those are commercial mag bases. It's standard now at least for those. The others are no longer available and when they replace the mags for CDN pistols that's what there is.

Thanks Jim, so would you think these bases were probably added once the pistol was returned to Canada in the '70's?

I think the whole mag is a commercial, that is to say, not a JI mag so they'd all be right from the factory the same as the civvie mags...but they're just as serviceable as the JI mags. Are the followers black plastic? Thing is, those mags could have been matched and numbered anytime. Since it's here, the mags could have come out of our system or...? I saw quantities of those mags in my last unit, and a mixed drawer of refurb parts as well.

Either an accountability thing or someone trying to make the sale taste better by having MATCHING(!) mags. I think...

Your terminology needs correkting!
There is NO such thing as a "Belgian Inglis! That is the same as saying I have a Chevy Galaxi!
The Inglis was Only made in Canada - NEVER in any other country!

The reason I am calling it a Belgian Inglis, is that it was exported to Belgium as indicated by the numbered magazines and the large "5" numeral on the right side of the frame. (Ref: Chapter 14, Inglis Diamond, Clive Law) 1578 CH/1CH**** pistols were sent to Belgium in 1950. Many were refinished in a light gray teflon finish, some , such as this example, remained in the original finish. The Belgians sold off their surplus Inglis pistols and some came back to Canada via several dealers.

The Inglis pistols exported to Belgium are well know for having 2 numbered magazines each (ie: p 228, Inglis Diamond). The Belgians tested mags for function and matched 2 to each pistol and applied the pistol serial number to the mags (back and base). My magazine bodies are "JI" marked inglis mags, the followers are also identical to all my other Inglis mags. The only oddity is the non-Inglis mag bases.

OK, that all makes sense then. Replaced along with the distance plate at the bottom to lock them. Ours had no such thing, maybe they were damaged.

In the UK Military we had a mixed fleet of Inglis and Browning pistols. We also had an EMER list of fully interchangeable assemblies and another list of fully interchangeable parts. However, we never numbered our magazines......, there's simply no point as they're all interchangeable(?)
