Parker Hale PH-5B on my Eddystone P17

Dear all,

I'm looking for a PH-5B sight for my Eddystone P17. I was under the impression that it is an easy mount on my P17.

After searching this forum I'm getting the idea that it is not quite "plug and play". Also see this thread https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=38535.

I have the following questions:
1) I know many PH-5B sights have been modified in the past, but should it be "plug and play" or is there always a slight modification required to fit it onto my P17?
2) In the above thread it is referred to "bolt stop spring", what part is that on the P14/P17.

Most importantly I want to avoid any drilling in my P17, changing parts and keeping it as original as possible is important for me.

The bolt stop is the part you pull out to release the bolt from the receiver.
The bolt stop springs are slightly different on a P14 and a US Model 1917.
The P14 spring tapers at the rear and the Model 1917 spring is straight.
The PH sight replaces the round part that retains the spring on the receiver so it won't work
with the non-tapered Model 1917 spring. Parts that are simple to replace and available. - Bill

edit to add: No holes will be have to be drilled or permanent modifications made, the sight is designed for the rifle.
However in my experience the sight axis screw which is very fine and somewhat frail has a tendency to
be frozen on a 100 year old rifle. If replacing the bolt stop spring I would order an axis screw and nut just in case.

As indicated in some of the previous posts the bolt stop spring on the M1917 has to be changed to a P14 bolt stop spring due to the taper on the spring. The PH5B rear sight should fit with no problem. Additionally the axis screw for the original rear sight is not long enough to secure the PH5B rear sight to the receiver. If you are purchasing a PH5B rear sight make sure the longer axis screw is with the Parker Hale rear sight. These are often removed and do not come with the rear sight. Fulton has the longer axis screws for about 12.50 GBP.

These rifles are very accurate with the PH5B rear sight and a good barrel.

The screw is a #7BA, if I recall correctly. They are somewhat fragile and I have made several of them on the lathe in the past. Sometimes you find some earlier owner has drilled and tapped the threaded hole for 'something else' after the original screw had broken on him, and then the fun begins ...
