    Ontario Current Production Kabar

I was at a Walmart on our hunting trip and found a nice Kabar I have no real reason to buy other than it looked really nice. Made by Ontario in the US, all black metal with nice clean leather handle. I didn't buy it but my daughter asked the next day if I would like it for Christmas and I told her that would be very nice of her. So if you want one you aren't afraid to use, they run about $46. I'll probably never use this one either, too nice.

I've seen some very nice looking new made K-Bars too. I have to hold back because I have too many now and simply don't have use for more. As is I'll end up handing them all to my youngest boy, or his boys...

Ill be picking up another KaBar this week to give to my Nephew on Friday when he graduates from MCRD San Diego.
I'm thinking on going with the classic version.

This one was tough, I should have just walked away but I was curious and when I had it in my hands I fell in love with it. I don't need it and was able to hand it back and say no thanks. I have been carrying an Ontario survival knife I bought at the Army uniform shop around as my deer knife for about 25 years and was in the woods telling my daughter how the handle looked just like the one at Walmart when I bought it. It is now black from fat and blood I guess. That was when she asked if I would like the Kabar for Christmas. She's good kid.

46 dollars is a better deal than at MCX, I wonder if there is any difference between the two?

The finish on the new ones is not parkerizing but more like a bake on finish...I think.

How would you tell the difference between baked on and parkerization? The finish is black. It has also been removed from my ability to examine until Christmas.

Parkerization is a crystalline structure on top of the metal. A baked on coat looks like a baked on paint. Possibly it's powder coat, which still looks like a paint for the most part. It won't look like parkerizing.

The website says it is a zinc phosphate finish on the blade. It's pretty tough, the survival knife I have been carrying for 25 years still has it's finish. That particular knife has a baked on paint on the bottom of the handle that has half chipped off.
