    I have this old Colt..

For starters this is a family heirloom, so to me it is still priceless. I received this back about 20 years ago from my father. He came into possession of it after my uncle passed away suddenly, so no back story. Well it is possible it came from my grandfather (My uncles father) to my uncle, unfortunately my uncle passed away before his father (My Grandfather).

Anyway just figured a little show and tell. From what I see on the butt it is stamped US ARMY 1917, 42 over 700. Grips, cant tell a thing but they are in real nice shape. The barrel is stamped "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" on the bottom with a small P right where barrel fits to frame. On left side up by rear sight looks almost like JM inside a G .
Yes somewhere in the past someone looks like added a rear solid rear sight. The front also has been built up and has a clamp on ramp added. No idea why someone did this or who for that matter.

Just figured I would throw this up for some to enjoy..

Nice old gun, too bad it's been altered but you can still shoot it...

    Hello,

It does appear to have had internal work done. You might want to make sure of function before firing.

If you handload, you might prime some brass and check the primer strikes, make sure they all go off.

    Regards,

    Josh

we all know the saying..."Had we of known then what we know now" truly applies to this war dog. As mentioned , No idea who did the add on to the sights but that's how I received it. I do not know if either my grandfather or uncle had that done, But I do doubt it. Just knowing how they were with their firearms and everything else for that matter makes me doubt that they had it done.

The rear sight was defiantly added but not sure if original was ground down and this one added on . Also under close examination you can see the bluing touchup job only around the sight. The Front sight, the ramp is clamp on, but they used something epoxy like to fill the gaps and reshape the blade. I think front sight restoration would be easy, But the rear is a whole other story. This is one that I truly wish was all original, But still has sentimental value as it sits.
