Looking at a 1903A4...A couple of questions...

    Hello,
I've been considering buying a 1903A4 to collect and possibly shoot competitive. I see there are reproductions out there by about three companies and not badly priced considering what originals are costing. I had a person email me and said he had one: the serial number is within the first block of numbers, re-barreled with a R.A. barrel dated 2/44, C type stock (not original), correct scope mount w/ 7/8" rings and a Lyman Alaskan scope. Here's the kicker; the rifle at one time had a receiver sight installed. It has (2ea) holes on the right side of the receiver. It has since been removed and is plugged; not welded up though. The individual who offered to sell it has a price between a reproduction and an original. What do you all think? Is it worth considering? If so, would it be in the same category as a reproduction? I appreciate your input. Thanks for looking.

You've repaired a rifle that has been drilled and tapped for a non military sight...so it's been altered. Then you add a scope that was never on it, or was it? It lies in the number range, was it a 1903A4 or just a number in the range? Now it has a replacement barrel on it. Sounds like I'd pay shooter prices for a put together rifle...
    Regards, Jim

If "it's in the range" it has to be an A4.... no A3's mixed in with the A4's.

I found one on a site. The owner says it was re-furbished at the Rock Island Armory and is stamped on the stock.... were 1903A4's ever sent to RIA for re-work???

I have one that is marked with the RIA/EB inspector's mark so the answer is yes. Many were rebuilt and inspected just down the road at Augusta Arsenal too, (AA).
