Chances are that they are on the reverse slope where artillery can't touch them. Mortars can if they are close enough but then they are firing blind.

Depends on where the enemy is. Mountain warfare is a bit different.

Don't really matter if Arty comes in as all the secondary missiles from the rocks will do as much to a man as shrapnel I would be seeking a sneakier spot unless the enemy is way on the other side of that range out of range then alls good then again there's always an aircr....?

If you look at plenty of pictures taken in wwI on the Italian mountain front, people were exposed in a similar way. If the enemy is on the other side, you're safe enough.
Modern warfare is different, but until wwII, you could afford situations like that, especially if you were an Allied soldier, with air superiority.
We were still learning such principles in the early 90ies. Although with a lot of ifs and buts.
