    1903 Springfield sporter...or NM

This weekend I won a Springfield Sporter style rifle at an auction. I got it pretty cheap and was encouraged by the fact that it is listed on the Springfield Research Service data base...but as a NM model. It is strange, however, because dozens of rifles before this one and dozens after, all consecutive serials, are listed as Sporters.

I'm guessing that the data base is off or that a buyer converted a NM model to a sporter configuration.

Description advised a serial number of 1266801 and a "Star Crown".

Sure looks like it's done it's share of work to date...I'd love to try it out.

    question on o3 a3

have recieved o3 a3 # 3895963 an inheritence from a family member. rifle has lyman sights installed which made a great improvement to rifle. accuracy is exceptional however the bolt does not slide back far enough to pick up rounds from magazine. upon inspection i find the sights are not affecting slide back it appears as if the rifle may have manufactured in that manner. has anyone heard of that ?

It sounds like your magazine cut off is engaged. This was a device that allowed the shooter to load a full magazine, then fire single shots by hand feeding, thereby having a full magazine when the s--t hit the fan.

There is a tab in the left side of the receiver that is used to engage the magazine cut off and to remove the bolt. The tab has "ON" on one side and "OFF" on the other. The middle position is for removing the bolt. Change the position of this tab and see if you can feed from your magazine.

Looks like it. I got it for $600, so I'm hoping that even with the warts, I'm ok on this.
