My uncle flew C47's and C46's over the "Hump" in the CBI theater of WWII.
He is on the left with the Thompson. Probably out rabbit hunting with his buddies.
They carry the only arms they would have had on their flights.
He was quite a guy, and I miss him.

Yup, hunting bunnies... Must say, I've shot critters with some large and in some cases explosive cartridges too...

Somewhere I have photos of my dad and two of his buddies with a pile of jackrabbits next to his assigned WWII jeep. They were using Tommy guns and H&R Model 12s.

On the back of the photo my uncle had written that the location was near Kunming hunting in the mountains in 1945.
They each carried a 1911 and knife, as always. Plus the Thompson, M1 carbine, and the M1 Garand on the end. Their ride was a jeep with mounted M2.
They were pilots and not a strike force, but required protection. Probably more from bandits than Japs at this point.
My uncle suffered from stomach and intestinal problems all his life after China.

Smokey Yunick was an automotive pioneer from the 50's thru 80's who flew the hump in WWII. His three-book autobiography is quite interesting!
