    1903 Mark 1 Trigger Problem???

I recently picked up a 1903 Mark 1 and have been having trouble with the trigger. The trigger consistently pulls only one stage. If I hold down on the cocking knob with my thumb the trigger will show a good second stage. The sear that came with the rifle was not correct so I was able to find a real Mark 1 sear but am having the same problem with both. The cocking knob doesn't look to be filed down. Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance for any help.

The trigger should have two easily defined humps when viewed from the side. Maybe when you push down on the cocking knob the slack in the mechanism is removed and is reacting with whatever is left of the second hump.

Attachment 86407 Sear rest and cocking piece is controlled by the first stage cam in front. When you squeeze, that cam pivots on the bottom of the receiver and draws the sear down a little bit and then the second stage takes over and continues the movement until the striker rod is released. And you can feel it when it stops. If that second cam is worn the trigger will act like a single stage and be mushy or even more if the pin and sear hole has some clearance in it too. These two triggers I took out of regular 03's because I wanted to increase pull weight a little bit and get a better break with a better wear pattern and new sear spring. They had a second stage that you could feel but were a little sloppy for the other parts and my endeavors at the time.
