    Lyman TP "Roger Payne" Mount

Had the good fortune to examine a Long Branch TP today. Mount was marked "Roger Payneicon UKicon" inside both rings. Had to distinguish from the original. Roger - what time period to you manufacture or distribute these. How many out there? What an awesome service for guys doing restorations. Ron(Canadaicon).

    Hello Ron,
Thanks for yours. I got the TP ring sets done about 20 years ago so that I & a couple of friends could assemble ourselves TP lookalikes. However, I subsequently got lucky & bought a genuine one from the Charnwood collection, so the reproduction became surplus to requirements. I had about 20 of the bases done, but only the three sets of rings. Hope this fills in a few blanks for you.

    Best.

Thanks Roger. Wow - just 3 upper ring mounts. That makes these pretty dam rare. Ron(Canadaicon)

At least one in Canadaicon. Any guesses where the other 2 are? Ron(Canada)

To be honest Ron I really can't remember now, though IIRC one did end up on a deactivated rifle & was sold on to a UKicon militaria dealer some years ago. He moved it on himself in due course, but I'm afraid I don't know to whom it was sold.

Roger had a complete base and ring set made for me to restore an original rifle that was plucked from a load of service rifles imported by Southern Ohio Gun. Alpha Trading import stamp. It shot so well after I was done restoring it, that I wouldn't change it to an original even if I had one. The late Pete Bloom found me an original telescope one number off from the original which made it an even more satisfying project.

Wow. That's 2 of 3. I agree with Brian. Very well made and initially I thought this one to be original until I took the scope out of the rings and saw your marking inside the scope rings. Ron(Canadaicon)

The good Doctor was the only person I knew that had an original base/ring assembly to duplicate at the time. His late, great machinist was simply unbelievable in his attention to detail. I acquired the rifle from a Gent at the Hwy. 24 show in Nashville, TN. The first TP I had ever laid eyes on in the USAicon but less the cheek piece and telescope. I had two original Canadianicon cheek pieces here at the time and one dropped right on. The mount base Graham made also dropped right on. I even had the long ejector screws straight out of a bin of LB parts auctioned in the 1970's. Roger supplied the rest and the taper pins. A project that took some time but just fell together perfectly with minimum effort.
