Agreed. Guys in back don't seem to comprehend the situation just yet.
The TC is not standing up in the top hatch, either.

The "tank" in this image was one of the M36 tank destroyer series, probably a 90mm Gun Motor Carriage M36B1. The exact model is obscured by the personal equipment attached to the open top gun shield.
As to what is happening apparently the photographer was unaware or unconcerned of the "action" happening behind him, and that you're reading into this image.
I find it interesting that the rifles are still slung.

Looking at the 'action', I wonder if they've just had a few mortar rounds lobbed their way land at their front.
