Just picked this up last week, musket no rifling. any info?

Yes, this is a musket, not a trapdoor as originally though. Still you could splice a new front to it, it's been done. You could just shoot it as is. The stock would be hard to find here. Then you're putting way more money into something you shouldn't I think...but I should talk.

You have a rifle musket that has been converted post military service to a shotgun for the civilian market. If the barrel is still it's original length (39 inches long) it could have a forearm added. You will also need the three barrel bands, band springs, nose cap and ramrod but it will be very cost prohibitive.

Also, keep in mind that the lock (made at Springfield) came from a M1864 rifle musket while the hammer and barrel are both M1861 items. This model mixing probably took place at the time of "sporterization".

i thought it might be a shotgun, with bead sight and no rears, thanks for info guys

Yes, It’s been converted to a shotgun. Surplus muskets were cheap, so thousands of them were bored smooth and made into inexpensive shotguns.
