CMP .22 Aguila ammo

Gang,

My first post on this new server.

I'm looking to buy some .22lr ammo which will be used primarily for informal target shooting. I went to the CMP website and see they have two different types of Aguila .22 ammo. The descriptions of the two are identical with the exception being that one is slightly higher in velocity and is priced higher.

What is the actual difference and have any of you used this ammo?

Would I be better off ordering different ammo from on-line sources and if so, what are they?

I am about half way through my 5000 case of the Golden eagle. It is really good ammo in all of my target rifles. It also works well in my AR .22 upper.
Last year when I was at Butner, I spoke with the CMP guy that puchases the ammo from Aquilla. He told me that the difference between the more expensive ammo and the cheaper was an extra step in the quality control that checks for bullet diameter. He said you could buy the cheaper and sort them yourself. I don't know how many of the GE's you are likely to get from a case of the cheaper Aquilla. I will buy the cheapest version in the future.
The CMP ammo is a real bargain.

Picked up a case of the lower velocity ammo after talking to George at the North Store. I ask him about the two types they had in stock and the difference for my situation of just target shooting and trying to beat my last score. The lower speed stays under the sound barrier and does not lose tracking when slowing down because turbulence is constant. (wind resistance). Sure sounded good to me, but what the hell do I know !
I am not an expert but this stuff has worked well in my Win 52 and Rem 37 all last summer.

I have shot aguila in my Win. 52D, Rem. 37 and my 513T and can not get it to group deciently. Maybe I am doing somthing wrong. My rifles all like Eley black box though. Slim

I think that good in this respect is a relative term. Good to me may not be good to you, especially when compared to Eley Tenex. Good to me is consitantly hitting a smallbore chicken silhouette at 100m, or a 2" ten ring. For benchrest shooters, anything approaching .5" at 50m is unacceptable.
The only ammo that is never worth the cheapest price to me has always been Winchester T-22. But I have heard others swear by it.
If your gun likes cheap ammo, it will really like the expensive stuff, I have often found.

Long ago I found that every rifle has its own likes and dislikes. Some are really fussy and others work well with just about anything. That said, it pays to do some testing and then go with what your rifle does best with. That preference also changes over time but I have found that a test session with some ten or so difference ammos will certainly be a lesson learned and make you a much wiser marksman.

I totally agree with Gaffer. I keep 9 to 10 different brands of 22RF on hand just to test new target rifles. I have generally found Wolf Match Target, and CCI Green Tag to be the the most consistent of the less expensive ammo that I use. When testing, I also usually shoot at least 5 shots of the new ammo, to re lube the barrel, before trying for groups.
