    Swedish M96/38

Does a flash hider make a difference? Is it only used for shooting at night? I needed to cover the threads at the end of the barrel so I bought an end cap and a flash hider. After shooting a target at 50 yards I didn't notice any difference between the two.

Supposedly it’s supposed to hide the flash from the shooter to preserve night vision. I’ve never seen any research to back that up though.

racthey, you are correct. The idea of a flash hider is that the rapid expansion of the burning gases cools them down so far and fast that the flame is snuffed out. There probably was research way back when. If anyone has a link to a test report on flash-hiders, let's have it.

Thank you for the information. I never thought about how a flash hider actually worked.

The round one on the FAL worked very well in the dark, almost zero light. Practical experience.

The thread on the m/96 barrel was for the fitting of a blank firing device and nothing else, the Swedes only ever had a small plastic cap to cover the threads and the metal cap and "flash hider" items that can be purchased were an after market option and never used in service.

Very true but they look a whole lot better with the threads covered with something and the "flash" suppressor looks pretty good.

Aragorn243; Covering the threads looks better but my main intent is to protect them. The flash hider does look cool but the cap works just as well.
