    You can see the muzzle ring of it could it be an '07 or M-17 why would he have it, bit of kit swap with a Britishicon soldier!

    My guess would be Engineers (older and more technical ratings) they lack the carbines I'd expect to see with a HQs type unit plus several appear to be carrying the small pick axes and the bazooka for demo. They also appear to be wearing the Gas Detection brassards (spelling?) on their right shoulders so I'm thinking close to D-Day

    Also, if they were going by boat they would have life belts, given they have inflatable vests (but no parachutes) I'd say these men are waiting to board a glider for the trip over. Also, the M3 knifes they are carrying was designed for use by elite or 'shock' forces in need of a close-combat knife such as airborne troops (which include gliders) and Army Rangers, and these units received priority for the M3 at the start of production.
