    You would want to be certain of no counter attack field stripping a gun to that extreme on the battlefield

    That would be why so many showed up for rebuild in such dire conditions after those long campaigns. Lots of corrosive primers and no down time, wet conditions and continuing action...make for a beat up rifle.
