He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
A real collection of hats in various states of personalization. A few helmets mixed in too. Both Garands and M1903's are visible. Even some sunglasses. Interesting group photo.
Looking at that photo of all of them packed in shoulder to shoulder, belly to bum, you have to wonder one thing -- 'WHY?'
Regimental photo before they enter battle?

I don't think so. That is something they probably had done before embarkation when they could get them all set out in formation with their 'Sunday best' on and the colours displayed.
I believe you are on to something here. Looking closely it looks like those are Sea Bees. Mostly Daisy Maes, no bloused pants, no leggings and the older fellow front left looks to have a Navy rank on his sleeve. Sea Bees would explain the different weaponry and head gear. Just my observation![]()

"We're surrounded, that simplifies our problem!"
Different headgear, different rifles, resigned faces, stand at attention, rifles slanted across body, freight ship adapted for passengers from the booms on the deck, rafts on the side and spectators in the background, very restricted space to assemble the men. Possibilities:
- we did something wrong and are going to suffer the consequences;
- not going into combat, going to disembark to work [hats, backpacks, different rifles];
- we are listening to something we don't want to listen to;
- equipment check;
- roll call;
- etc
'...we did something wrong and are going to suffer the consequences...' That, or 'I'm bored. Let's screw with the troops', have been my guesses since I first saw the photo.
