    advice on a Spanish Mauser

So I was at my local dive surplus store and there was a Spanish Mauser for 175 in rougher shape (like a 6 out of 10). The bore looked alright to me and what I am looking for is advice on if that's a good price for the rifle. I'm going to try and snap picture when if i can.

Hard to tell without knowing what model it is and seeing condition. If it's an M43, it may very well be worth that. If it's a 1916 in bad shape, that's more than I would pay. If it's a 93, again could be well worth that.

I've been trying to figure the model out on my own from memory and so far that has only left me more confused. But Like I said I'm going down Friday and I'm going to get some pics to show to a friend of mine who knows mausers like the back of his hand

TLC and elbow grease should smooth out the roughness quickly.

I'm not looking for a wall hanger I'm looking for a shooter and you think the rifle is worth 175?

Comparing to prices in South Africa, about what it would be going for, possibly on the high side. Bargain from $150 down.

I just love these "I've found a rifle, what is it and what's it worth" queries!

I cannot see any legible trace of a receiver crest, so it could be one of several models. A full-length photo would be the first requirement.

And you say you want a shooter. Me too, but my crystal ball just doesn't have the range to look inside a barrel several thousand miles away. Hands-on evaluation is the ONLY way to make a fair assessment of a likely shooter. Scrap can usually be identified pretty fast, but I have learnt not to trust bore photos.

So the best advice I can give is 1) let someone who has real hands-on experience with old rifles have a look at it, and 2) if that is not possible, assume that the inside is as bad as the outside - and that looks like wallhanger quality. So FWIW I agree with Daan Kemp.

Offer as if for a wallhanger, and you will not lose much if it's a dud - and have a nice surprise if it's better than it looks.

Looks like a $100 project gun if I ever saw one and considering I've passed on dozens of these for $60 I'd pass on this one also. The photos don't really help in identification but odds are it's a 1916 short rifle and you can still find fairly nice shooters that aren't covered in rust for that price.
