I don't think he's KIA. Look at his L/Hand firmly clenched on te forearm of the weapon. KIA would be relaxed and forearm lower.

BAR - I saw that as well. I haven't made up my mind if that's a helmet cover or the actual helmet. Take note of the wrinkles approx. 4" behind the hole. I took the photo up in magnification and see no sign of blood /bleeding on the face beneath the Helmet (cover?) hole.I say he's very much alive if not a posed picture. No other casulty,s or folks around. Nice scenic view of the Naval flotilla in background. Yup I,m thinking posed.

I would say taking a round to the head would be instantanous so the body would just stop.
There was a common mythe that Police marksman were trained to hit the cerebellam in the brain as the doctrine thought that a hit anywhere else would cause a muscle twitch causing the weapon if held to a hostages head to be discharged, this mythe has been debunked as a HV round inside the skull and subsequent hydraulic shock and tissue destruction cause cessation of any voluntary or involuntary movement its "Lights Out."

Just aiming under the tip of the nose say in line with the indentation on ones upper lip.
This guy is shot through I think the left eye and goes down like a light switch I watched the vid a while ago even so he's gone in an instant. Scroll to 1:25.

It is a KIA per description
Marine , killed by Japaneseicon sniper fire, still holds his weapon as he lies in the black volcanic sand of Iwo Jima, on February during the initial invasion on the island.
