Painted Coding on a No.1 MK V Enfield Buttstock

The painted coding, arranged vertically on the left side of the buttstock is: A 3 44 . What is the meaning of the coding ?

More than likely a rack number.
We were still painting rack numbers on SLR's (L1A1) in the 1970's.
