That is definitely a posed for the press photo. Just think how far a rifle grenade aimed horizontally will go before its trajectory puts in on the ground.
I'd watch at a distance...

Good plan.
Having spent some time with 40mm grenade launchers back in the day, which have a higher velocity than a rifle grenade, I can tell you horizontal fire is not recommended.
Even the underbrush bothers me about it. I was present when a young Pl Comd had a man fire an M72 with fine underbrush present after we told him not to. The explosion was directly in front of a friend of mine but some distance to my flank... Told you so Sir!
