Rock Island Help

I just picked up and early Rock 1903 that has a SA 42 barrel on it. Serial # places it in the safe range.
It has a button on the back end of the floor plate that when pushed the floor plate comes off.
It functions fine when fed normally just never saw such a thing. Have anyone of you ever about or seen such a set up?
Any thoughts or comments would be welcome.
I'll put it back to normal when I get the parts.

That's how they're supposed to work. Apparently the '03's the Greeks used and sold by the CMP, were altered.
