I may be wrong, but the guy driving that horse looks like he is extremely inexperienced at driving. He is holding the reins completely wrong and would have little control if the horse needed it. Yes, I have driven horses actually hooked to a very similar wagon.

It's possibly just soldiers "letting off steam" or finding something to do with some free time. If there happens to be a horse and cart, unattended, and a group of soldiers close-by with nothing to do, it's probably only a matter of time before one or two of them decide to try their hand at "carriage driving".

Well, I think it's because they're medics and could use some transport of some type they grabbed this. Yes, driver unqualified, maybe he comes from NYC or some such. Hard to believe they couldn't find a guy from O.K. or N.M. or some other place to taxi them but if all the medics are city boys... I'd think about every fourth guy would be horse qualified back then too. The spot looks like the same where the other pic of two helping one being guarded by one and a parachute is lodged up in a tree...possibly the casualty collection point at the edge of the DZ and these medics are about to gather and move their own guys to the aid station further back... The horse is actually in forward motion too, maybe the young Yankee medic is actually going to get qualified horse...sort of.
    Regards, Jim
