I'm not sure I've seen a definitive answer to this. Edwards describes it as "a coarse grained tropical hardwood similar to luan mahogany."

Could be Meranti wood. They used locally sourced wood which could stand up to the heat of India.

I don't know either but I refinished mine with raw linseed oiland it turned out great.
Here in OZ we refer to Meranti as Pacific Maple.
I know a few were stocked in Rosewood which went black when in contact with grease and oil.
