28 Feb 2021 Garand Picture of the Day - A Persian take on the M1

A very rare photo of the M1icon in service. This picture was taken outside an oil refinery that had been hit by the Iraqis. Even so, the troops pictured probably are apart of a local milita unit instead of the military, which would have had more modern equipment. Notice the AKM magazine carriers on the web harness of the individual second from left, indicating a multitude of weapons were issued within the same unit, to include AKMs and Garands.

I wonder, H&Rs? Sadam apparently had a couple he considered family rifles and used them to take his sons hunting when they were younger...hares and such... I'd like to examine a couple of these. I know there were documented bring backs...or maybe more like captured and destroyed.
    Regards, Jim

Seen...now I'm wondering, either H&R or International Harvester was the choice of export/lend lease because there were some problems with them... Anybody? I heard it here...

    Arabs

We gave the Shah of Iran a whole lot of Garands. The Iraqis captured some in their war with Iran.

The International Harvester pictured looks like a Springfield Armory (original) provided receiver.

Perhaps you could point out the salient features that informed your conclusion

Mark-- The easiest way to tell is the font used on the serial number. The serial number matches the font style used by Springfield Armory. IHC produced receivers use a bigger, blockier format style.
