As an editor, I totally agree with the cropping lines... all that background is totally irrelevant, the subject is two soldiers in the snow. Don't try to tell more than one story at a time. I do this all the time for the GCAJournal. One major point: try to reduce the LONG dimension of the photo, that governs how big you can show it.
Real men measure once and cut.
A Canadian veteran told me this years ago when I visited Canada. He secretly photographed the Germans who were holding him captive in a POW camp, during WW2, and after the war he became a professional photographer.
