U.S. troops of the 105th Infantry Regiment, 27th Division, after throwing a smoke grenade into a cave to smoke out its occupants, stand outside with rifles ready for action. Troops of the 105th and 106th Infantry Regiments are driving north across Okinawa investigating every cave or shelter that may harbor Japanese soldiers or Okinawa natives.

Smoke...not noxious at all. We'd be immersed for ages in it. That's why I doubt the exactness of this description. Now tear gas on the other hand, that could clear a cave. WP was considered smoke grenades too, that also would do it.
