US Marines probably Korea, cold and wet. It makes my bones ache just looking at the picture.

Probably the bayonet for the rifle.

Cinders-- Looks like a M1 Carbine bayonet.

Good. His bayonet will come in handy once he realizes his muzzle is plugged from sitting in the dirt and rifle won't shoot.

That was the first thing I thought too. Looking at the picture though has me thinking he perhaps has his rain poncho tucked under the muzzle.
