Stock still leaching oil ? See USMC Small Arms Repair on Iwo Jima

Ever wonder why your stock leaches oil on hot sunny days at the range?

This film reminds me of my Father telling how they cleaned, serviced and dunked small arms in the Philippines. They'd use gas, diesel or kerosene to degrease, which ever they could get a hold of. He spoke of how they stacked them and sometimes hung from overhead lines to drip dry. When dry they were oiled and sent back to the base depot. I don't recall him ever bringing up being dipped in cosmoline. So maybe he wasn't involved in any that were being prepped for long term storage. I think that's what the dip in this video is for, so these can be long term stored ? Otherwise the guy smoking over the dip tank is taking quite the chance

Imagine how much jungle junk was left after 30+days of killing was over on Iwo Jima. Web gear, gun stocks, canteens, butt packs, bandoleers, torn utilities, millions of shot cases, M1 clips, bloody bandages, human remains, ration cans, dud mortar and gun rounds, wrecked tanks, trucks and aircraft.

In Vietnam the A Shau valley was the site of several huge battles, the NVA left all the jungle junk for the Americans to find whenever they returned. Years later the same mess still there. That would freak people out.
