    5" shell

Today's find is a 5" shell which I assume is US Navy. No luck finding information on it.

Markings around the band which is intact read:

5 IN SS MK48 MOD 1 LOT LSI 72 ZUNE G (eagle in square mark)

Only other marking I found is on the shell itself and is a G

It's painted red, hollow with no base and screws on both the inside and outside of the shell tip.

So, what does the SS, LSI, 72 ZUNE and red color mean.

Well this is kind of cool although I now don't know what to do with it. It's an illumination round. So it appears to be complete minus the interior. No nose cap.

Nice find. I was just talking to a guy today that has 1600lbs of 4" solid projectiles. This one should be using charge bags?

I posted this in an ordnance group on facebook and was told it uses an M25 Mod 1 fuze which is not in the diagram. The parachute flare exits out the rear. Unfortunately, I can't find a photo of one of these.
