Reclaiming Drill M1 Rifles

Good afternoon, I see that the CMP has M1 drill rifles in stock, I was wondering what kind of work it would take to restore one to shooting condition. I know that the bolts are usually welded over and that the barrel will need to be replaced, as well as a few other miscellaneous parts. I also know that weld will need to ground out of the oprod channel. Has anyone done this undertaking before or can point me to another forum posting that goes through a step by step process?

I would like to know what I would have to look forward to before taking the dive.

Steve762, the ATF is fine with rebuilding destroyed MG parts kits into semi-autos. They are also fine with Dewats that have been made active again. The way the ATF sees it, if I am doing the 4473, that is a firearm regardless. Just look at the amount of BREN rebuilds on this forum.

Fits the description of our Rack Grade with the additions of: gas cylinder lock screw is welded to lock and gas cylinder, barrel is drilled, plugged and welded at chamber mouth. Barrel is welded to the receiver, firing pin hole is welded closed on bolt face. Rifle wear will be exhibited by worn and mixed colors of the finish; there may be some pitting on the metal parts; wood will be basically sound but may be well used with minor hairline cracks, poor fit, and many dings, scratches and gouges; wood may not match in color, type of wood or condition. Wood may be Walnut, Birch, Beech or other variety.

If your receiver was converted/welded because it was out of spec then you would be out of luck
