    This is from the web in 2009 don't know if it is accurate

    The so-called "ducks foot" just below the P proof found on a number of late NM rifles. Nobody yet seems to know for sure what this mark is an indication of.

    Thanks, that's what I've found so far as well that they were NM and shipped from RIA.

    My best guess is that it is a second pressure test, probably by Rock Island.
    Real men measure once and cut.
