You can tell the LT is a West Point (ring knocker) graduate by the large class ring on his finger. LOL !! Probably thinks he is General Patton.

It was always humorous to us when the new young officer would come in trying to look tough. He had no idea how young he looked, even to us when we were only nineteen or twenty. But we'd been on the line for two years by then.

This is in the period surroundiung the Berlin crisis (June 4-November 9, 1961) centered around the building of the Berlin Wall. Soviet and U.S. cavalry faced off across the first proclaimed and then fortified border around West Berlin. The U.S. eventually brought in the Davy Crockett platoon-level, recoilless rifle-delivered, tactical nuclear weapon system, the "watermelon with fins."
