    All good things eventually

come to an end! This new site is very slow and inconvenient compared to the old one. I used to check into the old site 1-2 times a day, I only check out G.T., Mauser, Kragicon, small bore and while sometimes activety on these (not G.T.) was quite slow, its now ridiculous. I go in 1-2 times a week and nothing new is there. While the new Jap forum is nice, nothing happening there either! Oh well, like I said------

Sorry, the new site is MUCH better for me. Sorry you feel that way. Look up the thread on how to speed things up in Firefox by disabling graphics, that may help.

    Hi Dave ...

I assume you're a dial-up member. If so, yes, unfortunately this modern software is graphics intensive and not really designed or built well for use with 56kb dial-up users in mind... On the other hand, if you're using high speed bandwidth access such as cable or DSL, then it should be fine, unless there's something else going on within your browser, computer or ISP connection.

Until higher bandwidth cable, or wireless type services become more widely available, it will continue to be a problem as the use of the Internet and even more video and graphics intensive applications appear.

I know that some members out in the boondocks subscribe to satellite based Internet service, which is good for data coming down to the user's computer, but not up, which on-line multiplayer gamers need. It is pretty good for Internet browsing for sites like this, but it can be pricey.

Another option I've seen people with slow data links like dial-up use is RSS Feeds. Milsurps.Com forums (including Joustericon) fully supports RSS Feeds.

Go to CSP (Culver's Shooting Page) RSS Feeds (click here). Read about RSS and then go down the page to the "Jouster.Com" forum display and select the forums you want "pushed" out to you. For example, I get the RSS feeds for all of the new posts sent to my Apple iPhone and can sit and read them in airports, with nothing more than a 3G telephone wireless connection. Works pretty darn good and is of course excellent if you have a Wi-Fi connection, or you're sitting at home in front of a real computer.

For people with regular high speed connections, using RSS is a GREAT way to stay current without having to come here constantly. Rather than visiting a series of Web pages every day, many Web users are installing RSS newsreaders and configuring them to pull RSS feeds to them. It's like having news delivered to your desktop! So, when you visit any site, not just this one, look for the small button to see if that site supports RSS readers. They even integrate right into your Yahoo or Google pages. Our button is right at the VERY bottom of the screen and you can click on it anytime to configure this site for your own RSS needs.

Even with RSS feeds, you would still have the dial-up slowness if you choose to go and read an ENTIRE post, but at least this way you get to select the posts you want to read without having to login and go through the whole site.

Finally, often any slowness with this site isn't the site itself. It can be the intermediate computing devices such as routers between the member and us. One way to quickly test as to how fast the Jouster Forums Home Page loads if accessed from someplace else, wold be to click on this link:

    Pingdom Tools (click here)

With average loading, our server generally returns about 10 - 12 seconds for the very first time it's accessed, which that test site does all the time. It's always a first time access from their location. You'll find that result at the bottom of their report.

Why is that important? In simple terms, when you access the Jouster Forums direct (not using that test site!) for the first time yourself with a reasonably fast bandwidth connection, you should see it takes about 10 - 12 seconds to display the whole page. However, if you have your Internet browser's "cache" turned ON (you should!), then the next time you click on the same link it will be substantially faster, because the images and other larger files are accessed from your local computer rather than downloads from across the Internet again. On our site, second cached load times for the same page generally run from 1/2 second to 1 1/2 seconds! Check your browser. If you have "cache" turned OFF, you are operating on ALL web sites (not just here) at speeds much slower than you need to be.

Hope this helps everyone here better understand the relationship between Internet speed and web sites, plus some options people can try to mitigate slow connections or sites.

    Regards,
    Badger

And you are largely the author of your own misery! You have a dial-up connection...that format is dying FAST, so you've got bigger problems than accessing this site! Get a real internet connection, and you'll find this site is VERY fast as well as being secure...something the old Joustericon was not!

John... Many of us live in areas where dial-up is the only service available. I contacted my cable TV company to see about getting cable for TV and internet, and was told that it would cost $11,500 to run cable to my house. I am fortunate that I have a clear view if the southern sky and was able to get satellite service. My neighbor is not so lucky. Tall trees on his neighbor's property obscures the line-of-sight from his house to the satellite, so he is stuck with dial-up.

x2 this site is far more easy to get to than Joustericon. least now I can go on any time without hangup or what ever, unlike the old place where best times to go on was early afternoon and very late at night.

    Dave,

As already noted, this site is much, much faster. Without a browser cache and on an initial access, it loads completely for me in just under 5 seconds, we don't have to look at unattended spam for days at a time, you can use the topics you wish in an orderly fashion, and don't have to wade though the p***ing contests. If that doesn't appeal to you, you're on the wrong site. It's like driving a BMW when you have been used to driving a Model A Ford.

There's slow and then there's slow

I'm not sure Dave is refering to connection speed entirely. "There's nothing going on over there" sounds like "slow" as in boring.

I like it here. It's different but nice once you get used to it. It is hard for old guys to change but change we must.
