New Sporterized Ross

Just got around to going to the FFL and finishing transfer. Thought some of you folks may enjoy seeing this. Decided to post it here as it's been sporterized. Purists avert your eyes.

It is a handly little thing. Done better than most. Scope looks to be a 4x Pan-Tech Sr. Maybe from the '50s? Very dark with its little 5/8" or so tube. Will have to strip the bolt down before shooting it as everything's stiff from old grease. Can't get to the bolt stop easily with the scope. Barrel looks like new. Sharp lands and grooves and very shiny. Opened the trap door and found a very yellowed note with the previous owner's name. No telling how long it's been in there. This work was done long ago.

Very interesting even if not a factory sporter. Barrel is a heavier replacement as you probably know, but just to be 100% sure, no markings over the chamber area?

Stock resembles a factory sporter stock profile, but the chequering pattern is very different and looks like a home job. Possibly a reworked factory sporter or perhaps an ex-military stock as the buttplate suggests.

Perhaps the owner was right handed but with a dominant left eye? Or just preferred to keep the top clear for ease of ejection and loading?

Scope seems to be set too far back, but it looks like maybe the knobs could go forward of the front ring if you wanted to move it?

It seems like a sporterized military rifle to me. Don't think it's a factory sporter but I'm open to hear from those more knowledgeable. There are what look to be proof marks on the barrel just ahead of the receiver but blocked by the scope. They and stamps on the bolt look similar to those on my other 1905 Ross military rifles. The cocking piece seems to be threaded rather than pinned like my other Ross rifles. There are cutoff and peened screws where a military rear sight would be and it looks like they filled the stock cutouts for the handguard and checkered over them to somewhat obscure that. The checkering is amateur but not bad. With age there is some cracking here but, if necessary, some acraglass can fix that. I'm not too worried about the scope. It is unusable, I can just barely make out a pine tree in a field from 100 yd. I'll just use the irons.
