Laminate stocks started to be introduced during 1937, but some of the makers were still using walnut stocks into 1940.

The cupped butt plates were introduced at the end of 1940, and pretty much all 1941 dated onwards K98kicon's had them.
Just the thing for putting round holes in square heads.

Note that from 1943 onwards Mauser Oberndorf (byf) was putting high quality walnut stocks on service rifles sporadically. Speculation is that they had a pre-war stock of wood for ceremonial or commercial rifles that was given over to wartime need.

My December of 1941 AR rifle has the laminate stock but the non-cupped butt plate. I always find it interesting that differences occur and it helps to show how war uses up every resource, no matter how small.
