So, with a bit of looking, apparently John's rifle himself... Here's what happened to it in 2018.

"John Garand's own Garand - serial number 1,000,000 - sold at auction over the weekend. The hammer price was $287,500 - a new world record for the M1 Garand."

So, in private ownership.

That was my initial search too, but apparently not. Never know, if you watch it may show up at a rattle battle near you...

Not a bad price for a $35USD rifle during the height of production in WW2.
