He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.
What is the first GI carrying in the cover on Rt hip, some are carrying ammo can's for I guess a 30 cal MG.
Poor ol' lofty ended up with 2 ammo cans for being tall I guess!![]()
That first man has an M1A1carbine with butt folded in the holster case. Not so oft' seen... Apparently these are 101st by the helmet marking on first man and this is the time of the siege of Bastogne.
Regards, Jim
looks similar to a carbine scabbard with a canvas cover

I do not see the wire stock, which folds along the right side of the stock. - Perhaps it has been removed. - got the backward Left side of the stock

Agreed looks possible - the scabard in the op looks rigid

Because he has the M1A1in it.

The photo looks like a mixture of different troops probably a lot of stragglers from the "tactical withdrawal" to the Bastogne. I note the one soldier carrying a .30 ammo box off the end of his rifle not something a discipline trooper would do.
Looks like first guy in line has in ammo can up on his shoulder.
Maybe third guy has another can and his left hand? (possibly carrying two cans and his M1)
