    I was under the impression that the USMC fought the 'canal with 1903's and that the only M1icon's they had were "borrowed" from the Army.

    Army units were armed with the M1, also late arriving elements of the 2nd Marine Division were armed with M1's.

    That's an amusing myth, lots of Marines had Garands on Iwo right from the start.

    I forget the exact reference, but I'm thinking it was in "Shots fired in anger" - an eyewitness story of Marines sneaking into the army supply dump and swapping rifles.
