L2A1 Sub-calibre Aiming Rifle

Came across this recently in the UK:

A No8 built up from a L2A1 Sub Caliber unit. Action Marked "Rifle Aiming .22 L2A1"

Haven't seen that marking before.

Would the L2A1 not have been repurposed from the L8.
Would appear this rifle has done a circuit back to a L8

Well .. if I read this correctly the L2A1 Sub Caliber units were built based on No. 8 Enfields. So basically what you are showing in your pictures is a "rebuild" of a No. 8 that got converted to L2A1 and then rebuilt to No. 8 again?!

What I don't know, Were they built originally as a L2A1 Sub Caliber unit or converted from a original No8 & new markings applied.

This example, I presume has been converted back to a No8 in civilian life

The action body is 1949 Fazakerley, and almost certainly originally built as a standard No8
The 'L' method of designation wasn't introduced until the late '60's, so the rifle would have probably been converted (at Enfield by the look of the action markings) during the '70's.
It would be interesting to see if there are any feint original No8 Mk1 etching under the new engraving
