Can we assume that smoke plume is coming from somewhere in front of the lead tank? Nobody seems overly excited, including the tank occupants...

Doubt it. Should be some reaction if it was caused by enemy action - eg more distance between tanks and awareness in the men. Whatever the cause, the photo doesn't seem to indicate enemy close by.
I notice that the pistol ports on the sides of the turrets of three of the four tanks are open. Trying to get a little ventilation?
