On May 5th, 1945 it became the site of one of the last battles of the war in Europe. With the total surrender of Germanyonly days away a small group of elderly French
politicians, newly liberated, found themselves mounting a desperate defense of their former prison against the remnants of Hitler’s fanatical Waffen SS. Assisting them was an American tank crew, a decorated German officer, and a handful of his soldiers. It remains the only battle of WWII where Allied and German forces fought side by side.
